Are you planning to take a trip in the coming months? If your answer is yes, then taking a travel insurance plan is the best idea. So what exactly is a travel insurance and what does it do? It is the insurance taken to minimize the financial risks that can occur due to trip cancellation/Interruption, medical emergency, events like delay or missed departure, delayed arrival, loss of baggage, passport or legal expenses etc.
There are different types of travel insurance packages available, and they cover a number of different areas. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while considering a travel insurance policy
- The first rule of buying travel insurance is: don’t talk to travel agents. Of course the main reason to avoid them is that their policies will usually be over-priced.
- Compare loads of travel insurance plans from the top providers and buy immediately.
- Buy a policy online as it enables you to access your policy at anytime, anywhere in the world.
- Many companies offer single, multi trip, family and annual policies. If you travel just once in a year, you can apply for a single trip travel insurance policy. Choose a multi trip policy when you travel 2 or more times. However, if you are a frequent traveler, it may be worth taking out an annual policy.
- If you are getting a policy for your family, make sure all members are included, as some policies have limits on the number of people.
- Spend time to read your travel insurance policy. You should check the full range of benefits and exclusions within the policy.
- Your policy should offer separate legal expenses cover, when you need to take legal action against a third party.
- Take a copy of your policy with you.
Different insurance companies offer different benefits. Choose a plan that suits you best.

Camping in the rain
Due to the economic recession, camping holidays in Great Britain are much more popular this year that in the past. Apparently bookings for UK camping holidays are up 40% on those of a year ago. The biggest worry people have about a UK holiday, and especially about a camping UK holiday, is the weather. We certainly get plenty of weather in a typical English summer, and quite a lot of that weather is wet. For some people it is a total anathema to even consider camping in the rain. What can you do? How do you keep dry? How do you get dry? I have been at camp sites where after just a day or so of inclement weather half the site has simply packed up and gone home. But it needn’t be that way. Camping in the rain can be fun.
In fact some of the most memorable camping holidays have been in wet weather. One I particularly recall was on the Yorkshire Moors when it didn’t seem to stop raining for two solid weeks. Admittedly this particular holiday was not under canvas, but was in a camper van. A friend owned a camper van and had lent it to me whilst he borrowed my car, so we always had a dry refuge. It might not have been quite so simple if we had been in a tent.
It is really a matter of attitude. There is no point staying under shelter and hoping for the sun before going out and having some fun. Just accept that you are going to get soaked to the skin and enjoy it. We did, clambering over hills and dales, pulling ourselves up slippery slopes, getting covered in mud and allowing the rain to wash it away. In the rain the colours are different; there is a different light which can be exhilarating. The Yorkshire moors are beautiful on these kind of days, clouds and rolling mists tumbling off the peaks, battering rain storms, challenging rambles, and finally back to the campsite for a nice hot shower and a pint of Yorkshire ale. What could be better?
