The Seven Wonders of India

India is one of the most amazing destinations for a vacation. Whether you liked deserts, mountains, beaches, nature, forts, culture or history of India has it all. From the snow capped Himalayas to the gorgeous beaches of Goa, India is the place to let your hiar down and take that well deserved break.
Recently NDTV, in association with the Ministry of Tourism’s Incredible India campaign, announced the final seven wonders of India.
Nalanda University
Nalanda, a Buddhist monastic center, often spoken of as a university, is situated at a distance of 90 km to the south east of Patna, in the state of Bihar. It is known to be one of the first great universities in recorded world history. The university was considered an architectural masterpiece, and was marked by a lofty wall and one gate. Nalanda has eight separate compounds and ten temples, along with many other meditation halls and classrooms. In this first residential international university of the world, 2,000 teachers and 10,000 students from all over the Buddhist world lived and studied here.
Sun temple of Konark
The Konark Sun Temple is located in the state of Orissa at a distance of around 65 km from Bhubaneswar and 35 km from Puri. It is dedicated to the Sun God or Surya. The entire temple has been conceived as the Sun God’s chariot with 24 huge wheels, drawn by seven horses. The seven horses are said to symbolize the seven days of the week and the wheels represent the 24 hours in a day.
Meenakshi temple
Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is a historic Hindu temple located in the holy city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The most important festival associated with the temple is the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam that is celebrated in April every year with great enthusiasm and gaiety.
The temple has 12 temple towers also known as Gopurams which range in height from 45 to 50 m. The outer towers of the temple work as the landmarks of Madurai. There are many Mandapams (Halls) in the temple, some of them being the Thousand Pillar Mandapam, Asta Shakti Mandapam, Oonjal Mandapam, Meenakshi Nayakkar mandapam etc. The sculptures on the pillars tell us about some of the miracles of Lord Shiva and also the story of Meenakshi’s birth and her life as the princess of Madurai.
Dholavira
Dholavira is an ancient metropolitan city situated in the state of Gujarat. It was discovered in year 1967. The excavations conducted here have revealed many ancient artifacts, like seals, beads, animal bones, gold, silver, terracotta ornaments and vessels. Archaeologists believe that Dholavira was a major centre of trade between south Gujarat, Sindh and Punjab, and Western Asia.
Khajuraho
Khajuraho is the temple city of India. Khajuraho is situated to the west of Varanasi and Allahabad and South of the River Ganges, in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The famous erotic sculptures of Khajuraho temples are the unique feature of the place. Every year, in the months of February – March, the Khajuraho Dance Festival is organized by the Kala Parishad under the Madhya Pradesh Government. Popular Classical Dancers from all over India perform during this Dance festival. Live performances of Indian classical dances like Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Bharatnatyam, and Manipuri are the main attractions of this grand dance festival.
Red fort
The Red Fort is one of the most splendid palaces in the world. The Mughal emperor Shahjahan built it when he shifted his imperial capital from Agra to Delhi. The fort has two important gateways – The Lahori Gate and the Delhi Gate. The Lahori Gate is the main entrance to the Red Fort. The gate faces the direction of Lahore and is hence called the Lahori Gate. Red fort is also the site for celebrating Independence Day (15 August), where the prime minister of India unfurls the Indian tricolor and makes a speech from its ramparts.
Jaisalmer fort
The Jaisalmer fort is one of the most beautifully breathtaking places in the state of Rajasthan. It is two hundred and fifty feet tall, and reinforced with an imposing crenellated sandstone wall, 30 feet high. It also has 99 bastions, 92 of which were built between 1633 and 1647.
